Rack Milling Cutter

A rack milling cutter is a specialized, disc-shaped cutting tool used primarily for generating the straight, flat teeth on a gear rack (a linear gear). Unlike rotating gear hobs, this cutter operates like a circular milling cutter, where its profile precisely matches the desired straight-sided tooth profile. The cutter mounts onto a milling machine and is fed horizontally across the workpiece, indexing after each tooth is cut to progressively form the rack. Rack milling cutters are essential for creating highly accurate racks used in linear motion systems, steering mechanisms, and large machinery where linear movement must be converted from, or into, rotational movement.
